Oakland County’s newest full-service pet care complex, Play and Stay Pet Care Center, has donated two sets of pet oxygen recovery masks to the Royal Oak Fire Department for use on its most frequently-dispatched rescue vehicles, to assist in the emergency resuscitation of family pets and other animals at risk of respiratory distress.

Dan Limer and Jodie Ellison, owners of Play and Stay and residents of Royal Oak, developed the idea for an Oakland County donation program during a nationwide pet care conference this past November.   In more than half of all house fires there is a pet living in the residence.  Many pets are lost each year to smoke inhalation, despite the diligent efforts of firefighters and other first responders.  It is quite common to attempt to revive pets in respiratory trauma by using pediatric masks.  Although this practice can be successful, human masks are not designed to fit a pet’s uniquely-shaped face.  Packaged in sets of three, these special veterinary masks can fit any pet, from the largest dog breed to a ferret or even a bird.

“We both knew we had a responsibility to improve the chances to save lives.” said Limer.   Ellison continued, “We approached Fire Chief White with the plan of donating the masks and he embraced it wholeheartedly.  Together we have been coordinating our efforts to make this program a reality.”   Limer and Ellison don’t plan to stop with Royal Oak.  “Our ultimate goal,” said Ellison, “is to outfit every rescue vehicle in Oakland County.”

“This is an ambitious program that benefits all our first responders as well as all pet lovers in Royal Oak and county-wide,” said Chief White.  Dan Godek, Chairman of the Royal Oak Animal Shelter Committee and a Board member of the Oakland Pet Fund, and Pat Capello, Royal Oak City Commissioner and member of the Royal Oak Animal Shelter Committee echoed White’s sentiments“Royal Oak seems to be a city of animal lovers. It's ingrained in this town,” said Godek.   “And everyone loves a happy ending,” added Capello.
